Amusing ourselves to death

There’s a new blog I’ve noticed that gives a good precis of Postman on the telly, and connects up his ideas rather well with the recent TV series The Monastery. Go read.

  1. Leaving aside ‘The Monastery’ aspect for a moment and just concentrating on Postman, this blog made me go back to his thought, which I read years ago. If a serious faith like Christianity cannot be sustained by televisual culture, then much of the Alternative Worship/Emerging Church needs further layers to make it deep. I’m thinking here of the audio-visual approach to worship gatherings. The roots need to go deep in the spiritual disciplines, both individually and corporately. Of course I realise that serious ‘emerging’ type people know this, but it is a sobering reminder that we can’t be satisfied just when we’ve devised a new worship style.
