Augustine’s Confessions
I wrote the foreword for this new edition of Augustine’s Confessions, which is due to be released in a few days’ time. You may or may not agree with everything Augustine says – for me, I’ve never been entirely convinced that he left behind the influence of the Manichees, and I think there are a few threads of it woven into his Christian theology. On the other hand, drawing the contrast between Christian faith and his previous beliefs was exactly what made him so careful to enunciate the differences. One of his maxims was that if you act in love, you will not ultimately fall into error. But one of the most interesting things about Confessions is the way it’s written – confessional, and in the first person, it is performative theology … you’ll have to read my foreword for more! click here to order:
