Church: what would you vote for?

On May 16, 2010 / By maggi dawn / Reply

Following the general election and the apparent shift in British politics, Barry Taylor writes:

I wish there was a way churches could be ‘forced’ to rethink how they do what they do–the vote in religious worlds is demonstrated by the feet–people leave, but it would be very cool if there were ways for communities to challenge the ways things are done in the some way as this election seems to have done.

If we could vote for the lines to be redrawn in Church, what would you include in your manifesto?

I’d have to ban banal “praise worship”. Only songs with a sound theological basis that relate biblical truth to everyday experience would be allowed. I’m sure God’s climbing up the wall with all the “pop worship” noise that’s being aimed at Him! And as for what it’s doing to the spiritual intellect of all those who participate in it…

John Bell of the Iona Community would become Minister for Worship.

There would also be a Reconciliation Tribunal where the likes of Matt Redman and (Saint) Graham Kendrick and others would be invited to admit the error of their ways and seek forgiveness. If they refuse, they will be incarcerated and forced to listen to banal praise songs being endlessly repeated (like they make others have to suffer in services!).

  2. You’re baptised. All offices of the church are open to you. Simples!

  3. A dotted circle – that way people could move in and out as they pleased, but everyone can feel included.
