Fingermaze
My son and I spent last week in the company of friends on the South Coast. Our holiday ended with a visit to Beyond's monthly meeting, which was at the Fingermaze in a park in Hove – a labyrinth in the shape of a fingerprint. Earlier in the weekend Martin Poole had recruited Ben and me to be the voices on his audio meditation. Ben read the instructions and meditations, and I read the scriptures. These were given to each maze-walker on an MP3 player.
Having a child's voice give the instructions gave an interesting twist to the event. To the extent that we imagine God to have a "person" I think we usually imagine him (or maybe her) to be older than us. An adult. Getting intructions from a child was a refreshing change.
As we walked the maze we also – like Theseus in the minotaur's labyrinth – left a trail of coloured wool behind us. At the end the whole tangle of intertwined threads was gathered up and draped, like dayglo spaghetti, over a bush in the centre of the maze. The image of Moses' burning bush was not far from our minds I think, but it was more a symbol of how our individual paths are more closely woven together with others than we sometimes realise.
Three quarters of the way round the maze my piece of wool ran out. I walked the last bit without leaving any trail at all. (Good job there wasn't a minotaur to escape!) I noticed all of a sudden how much easier it was to walk without taking a look back every few steps to lay the trail. My lesson of the week – look forward, not back. One of the things I love about these enacted meditations is that simple truths like that, which we all know already, suddenly click into place in your soul. There may be some wisdom from life that you need at a particular time. For some reason enacted meditations can enable the penny to drop on just the thing you need.
Martin's account of the night, with lovely pictures by Flo,is here. And the MP3 can be heard here. It takes a few minutes to dowload. Beyond will be at Greenbelt, and their new programme will be posted here sometime soon.
