Aslan is on the move. And so am I

On June 29, 2011 / By maggi dawn / Reply

It’s just been announced across the water that I am to be the Dean of Marquand Chapel and Associate Professor of Theology at Yale Divinity School. My son and I will be moving over there later this year, as soon as remaining items of paperwork and visas are processed.

Marquand Chapel at YDS is ecumenical, and as Dean of Chapel I’ll be overseeing the whole programme of worship, and also the development of the students’ skills in leading worship in their various traditions. The Associate Prof. element of the job is also very exciting, and will give me lots of space to develop the work I’ve done in recent years on theology and the arts.

This is a big adventure: it’s tremendously exciting to be joining such a vibrant and interesting community, and I am really looking forward to it. There are also, of course, a few strains of sadness and apprehension at taking a very long leave from England and many wonderful friends on this side of the Pond. But as with any move, there’s not much time to ponder all of that; the next few weeks and months are going to be fully occupied with packing up my life here, putting some of it in crates and selling/giving away whatever we can’t take with us.

  1. Congratulations! I’m glad the future has become clear for you, and am sure that God and the students at Yale will benefit.

Keep blogging so we don’t miss you too much :-)

  2. I am thrilled for you – it is such an exciting move. Sad for us in a way, of course, because I like to think of you ‘up the road’ but I feel I have got to know you quite well over the last few months purely in cyberspace, so hope to continue to hear of your doings once you get to Yale. Congratulations!

  3. John

All the best for the big change, and enjoy yourselves. It’ll be different for us you leave behind, knowing you’re not in Cambridge any more!

  4. Wonderful news Maggi, though we will be sad to see you heading the other side of the pond. Praying that this period of transition goes smoothly for you and your son.

  11. Wonderful news, congratulations. We’ll miss you on this side of the pond not least bcause it is going to be harder to find a reason to head up the M11 to the ‘Binson Chapel. This is a wonderful adventure and definitely a time to look forward and not back. God bless.

  12. Congratulations Maggi. I hope it all goes well and you make lots of lovely new friends.

  13. Congratulations on your new adventure at Yale, my niece’s alma mater. Wonderful to see a woman filling this position, integrating theology, worship and the arts. You should hop over to the West coast to visit Regent College, my alma mater, and see what they’re doing in that area of integration.

  28. What fabulous news Maggie; I am absolutely delighted for you. YDS has such a treat in store. I really hope this opportunity heralds a profoundly deep time of creative flourishing for you. I can’t wait to read the results!

  29. I agree with Neale: England’s loss is North America’s gain.

Just remember, if you ever decide to become a US citizen then you always remain a British citizen (so far as this country is concerned), no matter what promises you make as part of that country’s citizenship ceremonies. ;-)

P.S. If you get any spare time, will you please consider giving elocution lessons to American actors? Their fake British accents seem to be getting worse.

  30. Congratulations Maggi. All sounds very exciting.

  31. Christine

    Dear Aslan!
While you are on the move anyway, a gentle hurry-up nudge to the US embassy staff maybe… ?
What?! You’re not into visa? Sure? Oh, come on! Pretty please!
