Rothko

I went to see the Rothko exhibition a couple of weeks back. I've always found his late work fascinating. Like everyone else who loves playing with paint, I've tried to do canvasses "Rothko-style" and there's nothing like trying to do it yourself to discover how much genius and skill it takes to make a couple of rectangles of colour take on that aomount of depth and luminosity.

Not only does the exhibition bring together more Rothkos than I've ever seen in one place before, there are also photographs of the paintings taken under UV light which give some clues as to how the depth of colour is built up with layers of different types of paint. Rothko was always pretty secretive about his methods so it was great to get some insight into his technique.

  1. Hello Maggi,
I came to your blog to thank you for leaving such a kind comment on mine the other day. What a lovely surprise to see we share a great, great deal in common, not least of which is a shared faith and each of us having been to scads of live Bruce shows. I have a feeling we might share mutual friends, as well. Thank you for visiting Seattle Daily Photo. I don’t know what brought you to the Pacific Northwest during your holiday, but should you come back this way, I would love to meet you. For now, I’ll have to settle for the blogosphere, but I’m very excited to make your acquaintance. When you get a moment, please email me. Thanks very much,
    -Kim
